Character:
Character Name: Director Phillip J. "Phil" Coulson
PB: Clark Gregg
Journal:youlackconviction
Age: 50 (born July 8, 1964)
Appearance: Phil is very much an every man. He's designed to fade into the background, that's what makes him good at his job. On the surface he doesn't look particularly imposing or memorable. He stands about 5'7", middle aged, with a receding hairline. His eyes are blue, and his default expression tends to be a straight lined mask of indifference that's difficult to read.
He's almost always found in a suit and tie, the most variety in his wardrobe generally consisting of a slightly different pattern to his tie. On his more causal days he loses the jacket, sleeves pushed up to his elbows. Tactical gear usually sees him lose the jacket and gain a vest. It's very rare to see him in more gear than that.
Recently Coulson lost his (left) hand. Currently he doesn't have a prosthetic, and the injured arm rests in the sling while he heals. If/when he gets a replacement it will be noted.
History: Phillip was born to Robert and Julie Coulson in the summer of 1964. The family lived in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, where Robert was a history professor at the local high school and coached the school's football team, the Manitowoc Outlaws. Phil was an only child, as much as he yearned for siblings.
He and his father spent a great deal of time together fixing a cherry red 1962 Chevrolet Corvette. Phil resented it at first, wanting to spend time with his friends, but by the time the car was finished he appreciated it and the time he spent with his father in a way he never could have anticipated.
His father died when Phil was 9 (September 22, 1973), an event Coulson witness. It was a defining moment in his life, and one Phil carries even as an adult.
He grew up a huge fan of Captain America, collecting a vintage Captain America Card Collection over the course of two years. He also played baseball in the Little League, batting over the 400 meter mark.
He was recruited to join S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy straight out of highschool. He entered the Academy of Operations known the most aggressive program, and the highest percentage of washouts. Following his graduation he soon became a special agent and was taught by his supervising officer Nick Fury alongside John Garrett.
His mother died September 22, 1992, leaving Coulson with no matter family to speak of. From that moment on S.H.I.E.L.D. fulfilled the roll of family in Phil's life, allowing him to be wholly devoted to the cause, and to truly care for the agents under his command.
Through the years Coulson worked many operations that took him around the globe, making contact, friends, enemies, and even lovers along the way. His focus was often on super human. As such a fan of Captain America, the emergence of other powered individuals was something Coulson was fascinated by, and always had a hand on the cases when he could.
He began one of Director Fury's right hand men, and this began to put him in line with the events that would shape the universe as they knew it. He was charged with debriefing Stark after his escape from the Ten Rings, a task easier said than done. Eventually he got his meeting and much more, facing off again Stane and his enhanced suit with his agents.
Iron Man dealt with the threat and Coulson in turn dealt with Iron Man, organizing a cover for Stark which he threw out within ten seconds of opening his mouth.
He became something of an acting liaison to Stark Industries, and was sent back with a team to make sure Stark unlocked the cure to his condition. Stark of course almost immediately dodged his sequester, an act Coulson allowed. When he returned Coulson was forced to say his goodbyes to check on an 0-8-4 he'd been tracking to New Mexico.
Once there he and his team discovered an immovable hammer, not of this world. They built a compound around the artifact, borrowing (stealing) whatever information they could from local scientist who had witnessed the event. When a large man broke into the compound with the seemingly soul objecting of collecting the hammer Phil was intrigued, and held off his agents to see what would happen. Disappointingly the man was no more successful than any of their efforts had been.
When Dr. Selvig came to collect the man with such an obvious lie Coulson allowed it, instructing a team to tail them and find out what was going on. The appearance of the Destroyer and reveal of Thor was beyond anything the team or Coulson had been prepared for, and Coulson's attempt to debrief the God/Alien were unsuccessful.
He returned to base, time consumed with two major projects. The first of which was the Avengers Protocol, a team of powered or powerful individuals who could take on the threats S.H.I.E.L.D. could not.
The second, was the T.A.H.I.T.I. project. This was a procedure meant to revive the dead, with the hopes of one day using it on an Avenger should the need arise. Coulson was in charge of determining the validity of the alien based serum. The test subjects were agents, all terminal (check this). They were revived and early findings seemed amazing. However, the agents' mental state began to deteriorate. They became violent, and compelled to draw, carve or otherwise create strange symbols, hurting themselves and becoming their own canvas when denied an outlet. There was no way to reverse this except total erasage. Their skulls were opened up, minds rewired and all memory of their previous life rewritten. Coulson deemed the project a failure, and recommend it NEVER be used on anyone before resigning from the project entirely.
